Little Drummer boy – 12 Days of Christmas Carols

“So many Christmas songs…so little time!”

What is my favorite Christmas song is like asking me what is my favorite star in the sky…are you kidding me?? They are ALL beautiful, and there are too many to choose from. So if you were to ask me, I would say… “that one”… “or maybe that one”… “better yet, it is the second one to the right over there… yeah, that’s my favorite one…I think”.

Every song has a meaning and a purpose, and for the next 12 days, I have challenged myself to focus on 12 beautiful Christmas songs that convey a message of hope in 2020.

#1 Little Drummer Boy

Message: Use the gifts you have…they ARE good enough!

Christmas is about giving, but why do we spend so much time trying to find the perfect gift to purchase? We can never outgive the first Christmas gift – God’s gift to man. But we all have a gift within us to share.

“The Little Drummer Boy” is about giving your best… and the best may be something from within. Don’t ever think that a gift from your heart is not enough. Don’t ever think that your talent is not as worthy as the gifts and talents that others have to share. God looks at the heart of the giver.

The lyrics of the song tell the story of a little boy who heard the message of the birth of a king. Everyone had “their finest gifts to bring”, but the little boy had nothing, but his drum. The boy plays his drum for the baby king and, as a result, we picture the most beautiful gift a little drummer boy can give.

All of us have something like that drum to give…USE IT…GIVE IT!!

If Christ were to knock on your door this afternoon, what gift would you give him? There is nothing you could purchase that would be enough. But you can give what he has given you… your all!

Use the talents and the gifts of your heart when you give this year.

Do you still feel like you have nothing to give?? Give TIME! Time is something that can never be returned. Spend it wisely with the ones you love.

“Little Drummer Boy”, originally called “The Drummer Carol”, was written in 1941 by composer Katherine Kennicott Davis. It was first recorded by the Trapp Family Singers (yes the same “Von Trapp” singers that the musical, “The Sound of Music” is based on). It has since been recorded hundreds of times.

Here are my top 3 favorites of the song. Which one do you like the most?

PENTATONIX (BYOS X PENTATONIX)

Some of my students were surprised when I told them that Pentatonix did not write “Little Drummer Boy”, but I can understand why they would think that… it’s a goodie!

BING CROSBY

Can anything beat this classic??

BABYFACE

I love the reggae vibe and the smooth voice of Babyface’s “Little Drummer Boy”! You can’t help but to dance on this one!
