“So many Christmas songs…so little time!”

#7 All I Want for Christmas is You
Love the ones you are blessed to be with.
I recently had a Zoom bible study about “giving” with our church youth group, and I asked the kids what they wanted for Christmas. Like most Zoom class settings, no one responded, so to break the ice, I called on a young man who was the oldest in the group (a senior in high school) and who was usually not shy about voicing his opinion.
He sat at his kitchen table and looked at the screen and smiled for about 5 seconds before he unmuted himself and said, “Uhh…I really don’t want anything, Mrs. Fuller.”
Great…just great, I sarcastically thought to myself! It was not the answer I was looking for, but it was an appropriate answer … and my lesson hit a curve.
As if on cue, his mother walked into the kitchen and began searching for something in the cabinets behind him. My focus went to her, “Mom, did you hear that? He doesn’t want anything for Christmas this year!”
“Yeah, I heard him,” she responded, “So that means I don’t have to worry about that PlayStation 5!”
“NOOOOOO,” the young man laughed, “I do want that! I do want something for Christmas!”
…and bible study was back on track!
All of us want something for Christmas.
“All I Want for Christmas is You” is a favorite for so many. Mariah Carey co-wrote the song with Walter Afanasieff in 1994 for her holiday album, Merry Christmas. The song’s upbeat tempo makes you want to dance, and the lyrical voice of Mariah Carey makes you want to join her and sing.
The message in the song is clear in that she only wants to be with her love’s focus.
Christmas has been labeled the most wonderful time of year, but for so many, it’s not. It is difficult to face the holidays when someone is missing from the equation. This Christmas will be different for so many. Most of us will be without someone, whether they have passed on or they just can’t get to you for the holidays because of social distancing.
If you are blessed to be with anyone you love, enjoy the moments you have with them. Put your list of tangible gifts down and appreciate the time you have been gifted with the ones that matter most.
“All I Want for Christmas is You” – whether it’s true or not, it’s FUN to sing – and Mariah Carey gives us the wistful illusion that we can sing it like her.
If you haven’t tried to sing this song aloud this year, do it today… and DON’T hold back on the last note!
Of course, I had to find more than one arrangement of the song! Let me know what you think of them by leaving a comment.
Enjoy and Merry Christmas!
MARIAH CAREY – Mariah Carey sings this song like no one else can…really…but we can ALL try!
